Master of Medicine – Mmed

The degree of Master of Medicine comprises two parts. The Department of Ophthalmology offers Part II – by research only. This can only be taken by candidates permitted to proceed directly to Part II if given credit for Part I (by coursework) or have exemption from Part I.

Applicants may be granted exemption from Part I of the examination for the Degree of Master of Medicine if they have passed a comparable examination offered in a relevant discipline by an approved body. To view those approved to date go to: http://www.medicine.unimelb.edu.au/future/pgrad.html and select Master of Medicine.

Application procedure and admission requirements

Applicants should consult with the relevant Head of Department for the discipline concerned and submit to the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, through the Department of Ophthalmology, a proposal for approval by the Faculty’s Standing Committee on Graduate Studies. The proposal should outline the topic of the research, arrangements for supervision, whether the candidate will be full or part-time, and contain a statement that adequate facilities and resources are available. Applicants who are not graduates of The University of Melbourne, and who are claiming an exemption from Part I should also attach a Curriculum Vitae together with original or certified documentary evidence of their basic medical qualification and Part I Fellowship of one of the approved Colleges of Medicine or other evidence to support the Part I exemption.

Admission requirements are an approved MBBS degree or recognised equivalent of at least two years standing and not less than two years experience as a medical officer in a hospital affiliated to an appropriate university for the purposes of teaching. Successful completion of Part I or granted exemption from Part I and approved for admission by the Faculty.
