Amsler Chart

If a diagnosis for wet macular degeneration is made by your ophthalmologist, you should use an Amsler Chart two to three times a week to check for changes in your vision particularly in your good eye. This is because distortion on the Amsler chart may be a sign of you developing wet AMD in your good eye.

The Amsler Chart is a grid pattern that can reveal signs of wet macular degeneration. Basically, the chart is a tool for monitoring your central visual field. It makes it possible for you to tell if there are disturbances in your vision caused by changes in the retina

To use the Amsler chart;

  1. Sit in an area with good lighting, wear your reading glasses and hold the grid at a comfortable position (30-40cm).
  2. Cover one eye
  3. Look directly at the centre dot. While looking directly at the dot note whether all lines of the grid are straight or if any areas are distorted, blurred or dark.
  4. Repeat the test with the other eye

If you experience:

  • distortion or curvy lines
  • blurring
  • holes or spots in some areas of the grid

see your ophthalmologist immediately
