received the Mildred Weisenfeld Award
WHO Collaborating Centre for the Prevention of Blindness designation renewed for a third time to 2006
Victorian Government granted $1.8m over three years to Vision 2020 Australia to fund The Vision Initiative, a program that grew directly out of the Centre for Eye Research Australia's research findings and public health and health promotion activities.

In 2002 the Eye Health Promotion Unit of the centre was awarded a Public Health and Development Award for Research Excellence for its work in the prevention of vision loss from diabetes.
