Research
At the Centre for Eye Research Australia we conduct research into the causes, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of eye disease and
vision impairment in the hope of eliminating vision loss and blindness in our community.
We are
Australia’s leading centre for eye care, with scientists currently:
- reducing the impact of vision loss and blindness in targeted populations throughout the world;
- fostering a multidisciplinary approach to the promotion of eye health and the delivery
of eye care, including rehabilitation;
- investigating methods to slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration,
the major uncorrectable cause of vision loss in Australia;
- identifying genes involved in age-related macular degeneration and myopia;
- using retinal photography to investigate the relationship between retinal vascular
signs - indicated by blood vessels in the back of the eye - and the risk of stroke,
heart disease, diabetes and other systemic diseases;
- preventing vision loss from glaucoma and reducing the impact of the effects of glaucoma;
- developing a computerised decision-support system aimed at managing open-angle
glaucoma, the most common form of the disease;
- perfecting the process of corneal transplantation;
- conducting stem-cell research aimed at reconstructing the
epithelium after it has been damaged by burns or ulcers;
- developing diagnostic tools to enable identification of myopia
in children who are at risk so they can be targeted when
interventions are developed;
- refractive surgery research designed to improve excimer
laser procedures.
